Every painting starts
with a single idea or premise. Sometimes it comes from an experience,
like the painting "Another Point of View". That painting
popped into my mind when I climbed to the top of a giant fig tree
in the rainforest. In the painting, "Trouble in Paradise"
on the other hand, was to create the feeling of the rainforest environment
from a Giant Otters perspective, and what might threaten their home.
I tried to imagine what these playful otters might encounter while
spending time fishing and swimming underwater. I decided to show
that view in my painting.

The Kyrgyz people have
a strong musical and oral storytelling tradition. Until Russian
academics began compiling some of the oral history for publication
in this century, it was merely handed down through the generations,
as would be appropriate for a nomadic culture.

(literally "big drum") in Japanese. Taiko come in many
shapes and varieties with the body made of wood and the membranes
or heads made of stretched cow or horse skin. The Japanese experience
with these large drums dates from the 600s (CE), when Japan, under
the influence of the Chinese, saw the importation of Buddhist and
