June 25, 2012 – IMAGINATION CELEBRATION OFFERS A VARIETY OF WORKSHOPS FOR KIDS’ SUMMERTIME CREATIVITY: This summer, Imagination Celebration is offering workshops for children from pre-Kindergarten up through sixth grade at their Imagination Space facility. The workshops, of various subjects and dates, are scheduled during the weekdays when local children are out of school on summer break. The puppetry workshop also includes two Saturday mornings. The cost of each workshop is only a requested one dollar ($1.00) donation to cover the cost of supplies. The majority of the workshops meet one day per week through the month of July and the first two weeks of August. The subject of the workshops range from puppetry, where kids get the chance to design and create their own puppets, and put on a puppet show; to workshops featuring painting, drawing, sculpting and the importance of visual arts’ relationships to other important school subjects. June 13, 2012 – IMAGINATION CELEBRATION IS ONE OF 80 GRANTEES SELECTED NATIONWIDE TO RECEIVE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS OUR TOWN GRANT: The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has announced that Imagination Celebration of Colorado Springs is one of the grantees of their Our Town grant awards and will receive $50,000 to support the What IF…Festival of Innovation and Imagination. May 17, 2012 – IMAGINATION CELEBRATION’S “SUMMER FLUTTER” IS ALL ABOUT BUTTERFLIES: Free One Day Event is Scheduled for Saturday, June 2 at The Citadel. Summer Flutter: A Butterfly Fest is a new seasonal kick-off for Imagination Celebration, as they host this free, all-day event featuring butterflies large and small on Saturday, June 2. The focal point for this butterfly bash will be Imagination Space at The Citadel, but there will be activities and things to do and see both inside and outside the mall facility. Activities at Summer Flutter will include hands-on butterfly mask making, creative butterfly design, and other butterfly-related crafts. Tables for these hands-on activities will be located at Imagination Space, as well as The Citadel’s Center Court near the escalators and the Food Court. There will be professional face painting of exotic butterfly designs, butterfly balloon-making and the flying of various butterfly kites during the day. May 17, 2012 – DRAGON THEATRE BREATHES FIRE INTO THEIR SUMMER PRODUCTION OF “BLAZE THE SKY”: Dragon Theatre Productions, a program of Imagination Celebration, has announced auditions for their summer 2012 production, Blaze the Sky: Dragon Stories for Everyone. Auditions for all ages and all skill levels are set for Wednesday and Thursday, May 30 and 31 at Celebration Place at The Citadel. Audition times are 6:00 to 8:00 pm each day, on a drop-in basis. Public performances of Blaze the Sky: Dragon Stories for Everyone, under the direction of Cyndi Parr, are now scheduled for August 3 and 4. Any individual who auditions and can make the performance commitment is given an opportunity to perform. CELEBRATED AT IMAGINATION SPACE SATURDAY, JAN. 14th: The life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be remembered and honored at a special event, “Celebrating Martin: Dr. Martin Luther King, the Legacy” on Saturday, January 14 at Imagination Space. The event, scheduled from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, will be free and open to the public. It will include interactive art and storytelling, unique movement exercises inspired by Dr. King’s views on unity, and reflections centering on what Dr. King stood for, non violence and using words as his way to create change. Storyteller Lorenia will ask, “Who was Dr. King? and also center stories on the theme, Martin Luther King: From Humble Beginnings to Changing the World. Throughout the event there will be a wide selection of reading materials pertaining to Dr. King’s life and legacy displayed. An event-driven timeline defining the life of Dr. King and the social climate of the civil rights movement will also be featured. January 9, 2012 – THE TIMELESS TALE OF “MUFARO’S BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTERS” COMES TO PIKES PEAK CENTER ON FEBRUARY 3: Imagination Celebration continues its Over the Moon Family Theater season with Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters: An African Tale on Friday, February 3, 2012 at 7:00 pm. Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters is a modern fable of pride going before a fall and the realization of one’s beauty within, in keeping with the moral of the African folktale that is its inspiration. When a great African king desires a wife, only the most perfect maidens in the land are invited to meet him. Mufaro’s pride and joy, his two beautiful daughters of very different dispositions, embark on a challenging journey to be presented to the king. Along the way, they encounter and adapt to situations that test their courage, kindness and strength of spirit. The production, from the highly acclaimed Dallas Children’s Theater Company, is based on John Steptoe’s Caldecott Award-winning book. January 3, 2012 – Hispanic Art and Culture Featured in District 11 Art Exhibit: Imagination Celebration’s largest facility, Imagination Space, is currently featuring an art exhibition of works from District 11 students, ranging from elementary through high school. The exhibit will be in place through January 15, 2012 in Imagination Space. The artwork is of varied mediums, with the majority of the 118 works’ subject matter centered on “Dia de Muertos,” the Day of the Dead. This holiday is studied as art and history curriculum in the district schools. The best of the works coming from each school’s art classes are featured in this juried show. Individual art teachers at the respective schools made the initial selection of artworks to be entered. A jury of three local artists then studied the entered field and awarded first, second and third places plus honorable mentions in each of three school divisions – elementary, middle and high school. December 13, 2011 – Bemis School of Art holds FREE Holiday Adventure Day: Imagination Celebration’s exhibit and creativity facility, Imagination Space, will again host the Fine Arts Center’s Family Adventure Day on Saturday, December 17 from 12 noon to 2:00 pm. The free holiday event will feature art instructors from the Bemis School of Art who will guide participants through a variety of hands-on holiday art activities. Instructor Nancy Fraser Coco will be mentoring participants in creating winter scene Artist Trading Cards, while Sara Rashkin will be helping with the making of holiday-styled paper beads. There will also be other holiday oriented hands-on activities coordinated by Imagination Celebration staff. The activities are FREE to the public and open to participants of all ages. The young people of the land looked to their Fairy Godmother to sprinkle the knowledge of reading and the love of books upon them. And in the season of holidays, Mrs. Claus from the North Pole would make special appearances and have storytime with them, helping them make wishes found in books become reality through reading. A visit to this special land is now planned for the Pikes Peak region on Saturday, December 3 in the Imagination Space at The Citadel Mall between the hours of 11:00 am and 4:00 pm. The visit is free of charge and open to all ages of explorers. Throughout the day, there will be creative hands-on activities and family performances for all ages with dance, music, puppets and more, and teens and ‘tweens also will find much to do! November 11, 2011 – “Steampunk Ball” at the Mall: Followers of the Steampunk movement are dusting off the keyboards of their steam-powered computers and telling all of their friends about the Steampunk Ball, coming to Imagination Celebration’s Celebration Place in The Citadel mall, on Thursday evening, November 17 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. May 31, 2011 – Wounded Warriors Art Exhibition Opens in Imagination Space: Imagination Celebration’s exhibit and creativity facility, Imagination Space, will be the temporary home for “Military Creative Expressions,” an exhibition of nearly 100 art works created by United States soldiers recently back from world conflicts. These soldier-artists, members of Fort Carson’s Warrior Transition Battalion, have found solace and a medium for expression in the art they have created in this program. The exhibit will open this Saturday, June 4, 2011 in Imagination Space at The Citadel and be available for viewing through Saturday, July 16.
